Still waiting for a front sprocket.

Anyone else still waiting for a front sprocket? My bike has been sitting at the dealership for SIX months. The front sprocket went out. It’s part of a recall affecting 33,000 or so spyders from 2015-2019 only certain models. They verified that’s the issue, but no part is available and they don’t have a date when it will or if it will ever be available.

I guess I’m luckier than some with a choice of 3 dealers with them being 1 hr / 1 1/2hr and 3 hrs ride away. I rang up and got shoveled around attempting to get on a list for the recall.

I guess the reason for that there are a lot of farm type Can Ams in use on the farms about the place and they also sell the odd Spider.

Was told there are none in the country (New Zealand) and no known expected delivery estimate of when they will arrive.

Ended up talking to a Tech about. He said in the interim they are removing and applying grease and refitting after checking the splines.

I said I had already completed that at home when I picked up my 2 owner but new to me F3.

I asked what torque they applied to the retaining bolt. :cautious: Bit if a test I guess. ;)

He said gee I don’t know I just do it up with the rattle gun. Tight. Really tight. And I put lots of that Red Lock tight on it. o_O

Now there is a choice of 2 preferred dealers I would consider for the recall.

Pretty sure I've said this here before but let's try it again:

The sprockets that BRP has in stock are being shipped out for the recall ONE AT A TIME AS THE DEALERS ORDER THEM.......ONE AT A TIME WITH THE VIN OF THE MACHINE IN QUESTION.

It might be YEARS before they will ship any to dealers for "general back-stock".

The dealer has to do it right or it will never get fixed.
YOU must insist that they order it right or it will never get fixed.

That comment about using an air gun to tighten a sprocket gave me chills.
Ah I see. Thank you very much for that. I will be making some calls today, armed with my VIN the " on order" info.
Well, at least you guys are covered. I moved to Europe (Portugal) and the local dealer told me BRP does not cover vehicles that are "owner exported". So I did not do this in the States because they did not have the part available, now I am out a "few" Euros ($220 US!) for the part alone). Thanks BRP.

I think you should NOT trust what the dealer told you and check with another dealer or with BRP directly.
Sounds to me like they just don't want to mess with it.

Well, I thought as much so I contacted BRP directly. At first they did not know anything bout it, but a few hours later they called back and confirmed that if you take your Spyder from the country of purchase to another, even (like in my case), if there is a BRP dealership next door, you are screwed. THAT is really poor business when they created the problem know it is a problem, will fix the problem, but, oh wait, you moved, sorry, your problem now... so it seems I will have to pay for it. Since there is no red rust, I may continue to ride and see.

That might actually mean that your machine is NOT included in the recall anyway.
They ALL were not.

I know it is because BRP sent me a recall letter with my VIN on it. This is because (according to BRP), if you take the vehicle from the country you bought it in to another, they will not honor the recall. I suppose this may not apply to US/Canada, but it seems to apply to Europe. I talked with BRP in Canada and they confirmed what the local dealer told me: BRP will not pay for recalls in Europe UNLESS you bought your Spyder in Europe. Completely stupid, but there you have it. I sent a letter to BRP but no response.

THAT is because they have already given you the only response that they have.
You need to accept that, no matter how distasteful it IS, and just move on.

Hopefully they can still order you one recall sprocket against your VIN if you agree to pay for it.
This is a potentially dangerous situation which you REALLY should get fixed.

In the United States a recall to replace defective parts are issued by the "National Transportation Safety Board". It's, MANDATORY! If you attempt to have a problem repaired, and can't get it done the company can be sued and they will (NTSB) stand by you. Just he same as airplane parts.
It appears the part will be replace by "exactly the same part", which means a recall part in the future as I see it!

You aren't seeing it clearly.
They have plainly stated that the new sprocket has been "re-designed"
and it is NOT "exactly the same part".
