Hubby and I went to a motorcycle rally in Fortuna, CA from Texas. Spent several days getting there and hanging touring the redwoods. On the way home, in the middle of nowhere in Nevada, my bike went crazy - every light on the panel lit up and then started blinking ABS and engine. Bike slowed down to 55 mph, went into limp home mode and then just quit. It would not restart. After looking at the manual and trying some of the troubleshooting techniques, still wouldn't start. We were 55 miles from the nearest town. My husband was on a Honda ST-1300 and had to leave me on the side of the road to go into the nearest town and get a tow truck. It took three hours. No one in the town was certified to look at the bike. We had to procure another tow truck and have the bike hauled to Salt Lake City at very great expense. The shop, High Adventure Power Sports, was awesome. The looked at my bike the first thing the next day. Determined it was the battery and we could check out of our hotel and head over to pick it up. Unfortunately, when we got there, the shop manager said that he determined it was the stator - totally fried. It in turn fried the battery and regulator. The bad news??? No stator to be found for 2000 miles and the manufacturer had them on back order until December. He was kind enough to take one off his demo bike and put on mine. Warranty paid for most of the work, BUT, not removing the stator off the demo bike, plus, its a used stator - I feel the warranty work should cover a new part - I'm happy that I got one, but, I have no confidence in the bike now. On the way home, I tried to use my cruise control. It would not work. Shortly after, I started experiencing the same issue - flashing lights, limp home mode, reduced speed. We pulled over, turned off the bike, and waited a few minutes. Bike started up and no more problems - BUT - didn't try the cruise again.
The shop manager said that the fact that there were no stators to be had tells him this is an issue with the ST Roadster. I feel BRP should do a recall on this - I'm 60 years old and think its pretty unsafe for them to be letting owners ride around and not be aware that this could be an issue. I'm very lucky it wasn't 100 degrees while I was sitting on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and that I didn't feel unsafe.
Anyone else run into this?
