ST Limited Owners Beware

Hubby and I went to a motorcycle rally in Fortuna, CA from Texas. Spent several days getting there and hanging touring the redwoods. On the way home, in the middle of nowhere in Nevada, my bike went crazy - every light on the panel lit up and then started blinking ABS and engine. Bike slowed down to 55 mph, went into limp home mode and then just quit. It would not restart. After looking at the manual and trying some of the troubleshooting techniques, still wouldn't start. We were 55 miles from the nearest town. My husband was on a Honda ST-1300 and had to leave me on the side of the road to go into the nearest town and get a tow truck. It took three hours. No one in the town was certified to look at the bike. We had to procure another tow truck and have the bike hauled to Salt Lake City at very great expense. The shop, High Adventure Power Sports, was awesome. The looked at my bike the first thing the next day. Determined it was the battery and we could check out of our hotel and head over to pick it up. Unfortunately, when we got there, the shop manager said that he determined it was the stator - totally fried. It in turn fried the battery and regulator. The bad news??? No stator to be found for 2000 miles and the manufacturer had them on back order until December. He was kind enough to take one off his demo bike and put on mine. Warranty paid for most of the work, BUT, not removing the stator off the demo bike, plus, its a used stator - I feel the warranty work should cover a new part - I'm happy that I got one, but, I have no confidence in the bike now. On the way home, I tried to use my cruise control. It would not work. Shortly after, I started experiencing the same issue - flashing lights, limp home mode, reduced speed. We pulled over, turned off the bike, and waited a few minutes. Bike started up and no more problems - BUT - didn't try the cruise again.

The shop manager said that the fact that there were no stators to be had tells him this is an issue with the ST Roadster. I feel BRP should do a recall on this - I'm 60 years old and think its pretty unsafe for them to be letting owners ride around and not be aware that this could be an issue. I'm very lucky it wasn't 100 degrees while I was sitting on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and that I didn't feel unsafe.

Anyone else run into this?

Nope... Not buying this one. There have been NO reports of Stators going bad on any of the 998s.
I'd believe that either:
You were riding the brake pedal
The delaer just didn't charge the battery fully, before letting you out the door. These babies use LOTS of electricity, and a battery that's not up to snuff, can cause all sorts of problems.

Thanks for your reply. I definitely wasn't riding the brake. We were on a long stretch of highway so I had my feet resting on the passenger foot rests - for me that's a comfortable posture. My husband agrees that maybe the battery wasn't up to snuff. ThThe shop we took it to has a very high rating with BRP. The new battery had charged for 24-hours before they put it on the bike. If there are NO reports of Stator problems on this bike, why are they on backorder until December? I did ask the service tech if there was anything I may have done to cause the issue and he said absolutely not. I'm certainly not a seasoned rider - only had the bike since Feb 13. I do love the bike, but it makes me nervous to take it on a long trip and possibly running into a big problem again.

About a week ago the wife and were out riding, about 100 miles from home. We were on a long straight section of road and I was fiddling with the cruise control. Suddenly I got the orange screen of death and it was telling me everything was broken meaning it was throwing up the engine pic along with a couple of others plus it was saying 'check DPS.' On top of that the red lights on the speedo were on. It did not put me in limp mode. I found a gas station/store and parked it - let it sit for about 5 minutes and then restarted. The screen had cleared. It allowed us to continue home with no problems. I took it to the dealer a couple of days later and they stated it would show no codes and they could find nothing wrong. It has been okay since but I have only ridden it locally with one ride of about 100 miles round trip (did the Dragon). I also am worried about long trips now since about 3 weeks ago it DID put me in limp mode while I was in another state. Shut it down and a few minutes later restarted it and continue on with no problems. Dealer said it needed a computer update. They said they did it and everything was okay. Well...it was until last week. At least no limp mode, but what about next time? I'm thinking about a Yamaha FJR 1300.

The Salt Lake dealer updated all my codes so I know the second instance wasn't related to that. I really think trying to get the cruise control to come on had something to do with the warning lights coming on. My husband thinks there is an electrical issue on the bike.

Weird. that no codes were read?

I had an instance once, when leaving a red light, the bike just died.
The screen had a bunch of white lines running vertcal on the screen.
Turned the key off, waited only a minute or less, turned the key on, pressed the mode button and start, and she fired right up. Never happened since. Went in for the 1000km check up, and like you, no error codes were present.

Put on over another 2000km all ready without a hitch, so to speak.;-)

High price of freedom, gosh I hate the cost of 94 octane fuel!!

I have a 2012 RTS. Today I decided to ride to work. After a great ride in I was heading to a hair appointment. When i started it the LCD screen would show the check engine warning the the normal screen, then check engine in a alternating pattern. I turned it off and it did the same thing. Since the machine was running fine I decided to try to make it to my appointment. Bad decision. It stalled coming to a left turn and twice while trying to complete the turn. Lucky for me I made it to a lot right after the turn. Now it was also acting sluggish.

I called my husband rattled. I told him what happened and after we talked for 5 minutes he told me to restart it. All warnings were gone and it ran perfect. I made it to my appointment and then 30 miles home with no further issues like what had happened. ( Just the ridiculous gas smell that has never been fixed even though I never top it off.)

We take it Monday to have it checked out. Reading this post I have little confidence they will find anything. Got to try it though. Only 3000 miles on it and I cannot trust it. Sickening.

Optimus

I wouldn't get too upset about this. Take it in for service and think positive.

Worrying a great deal about it, won't solve anything.

Just have faith it will be fine. Oh, and carry a cell... ;-)
