SE5 Sticking in gear!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a new (as of April) SE5 Spyder. Today makes the third and fourth time it's got stuck in gear. All three times it's been different situations, and two different operators. It will just stick in a gear, and when you try to shift it it will do nothing. After trying to discribe this to the service tech again today, he said that after the third try the bike is programmed to try to shift all by itself then. I explained to him that we tried several different things, more then three times, and still nothing happened. Each time it happened though, after it cooled for a few mintues it would then start shifting ok again. It happened randomly. While trying to shift up and down. The service tech has already put it on the computer and said nothing was wrong with it, but upgraded the software anyways. Well today I go into the shop to purchase something and we got to talking about this problem again. He again said he never has heard of this problem before, and didn't really know what to tell me. I left a little disapointed, feeling as though he didn't believe me, but guess what.. miracles of all miracles happened as I left the shop, it got stuck in gear again! I wasnt' even a block away and it got stuck in first gear, so I immediately turned aroung and took it back to shop. The CERTIFIED tech then tried everything in the book to get it to shift and it wouldn't, even after 'trying 3 times' the bike wouldn't even try to fix it's self. He was baffled, and said he 'never seen or heard of this happening before'. I tried to tell him I have read it on hear happening, he said he's been here and never seen it? I know I've read it here a few times? After he let the bike cool down, wooola, it shifted again, then on the way home it did it again. He told me that he feels 'the bike needs broke in more', and that I need to ride it harder, spinning wheels and everything to help it get broke in'. (it has about 1600 miles on it) This just don't feel right to me? but what do I know. I am new to this thing, but my husband has rode bike over 40 years! He also said if it continues to happen and if I want him to, he will tear the whole transmission apart and feels that it's a mechanical problem, not software because he once again put it on the computer and it again showed nothing wrong. Thank goodness it happened while I was near the shop, what are the chances of that? So.. any suggestions, other people experiencing this? I know there was at least one person who said they had the exact same thing happen. Any and all feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Gear Sticking Fix Depends on Model Date

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe you've already read my post on SE5 Problems, but I had the same problem. Depending on when your SE5 was made will determine what the problem is apparently. Mine is a 2009 which I bought in May, but it was built in November of 2008. I just picked mine up from the service dept. this afternoon and at this moment it is working beautifully. BRP said that models of my date have a solenoid that has been now updated. It also has a ground wire on it. So tell your mechanic to call the BRP rep and tell him what's going on. If he'd like to contact the place where mine was fixed here is the name of it. Look it up on the internet. East Carolina Powersports in Greenville, NC. Phone # 252-353-4959 [email protected] The owner is Curtis Whitley and Plummy is the great mechanic! I'll bet that is exactly what is wrong with yours too!! Good luck!

Ok, thank you very much. I am going to take all of the replies to my post and give them to this mechanic to read. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

SE5 Shifting Fixed!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey, I'm glad you read my last post. Since then, I have had my SE5 worked on and a representative from BRP called me yesterday to continue to check up on my problem that I had had. The rep also had called the mechanic where I purchased my SE5 and fully discussed it with him. The problem apparently WAS the solenoid and the GROUND WIRE. The new one they put on has this wire and the old ones didn't have one. Not having the ground wire was not allowing the signals to go to the shifting mechanism. Excuse my explanation...layman here! I haven't had a problem since then!!! BRP wants customers to continue to let their dealerships know of any problems and let BRP know also so that they can continue to provide the needed service for Spyder owners! Hope you get yours fixed soon. It's such a great bike! Enjoy!!

This is great information. I talked about this in another thread, but the hard ground of the wire guarantees the signal is completed/sent. Without the ground wire the ground is called a "floating ground" and depends on the signal being completed by the ground returning through a series of mechanical joints. Floating grounds are fine most of the time, but apparently not good enough for the microsecond timing of this solenoid.... and sometimes the signal "got lost" completely.

Another Problem..Gas Smell!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that I have my shifting problem corrected, I noticed today that I was being smothered by gas smells! At first I thought it was my husband's bike and so I had him pass to the front of me. It wasn't his. It was my SE5! By the time we got home, I reeked of the smell. It's never done it before. When I first got mine, I really enjoyed the smell of the outdoors while riding, but not today. My clothes reeked of the odor. Do you have a clue as to what might be going on? Also my brakes squeak. The dealership replaced the brake pads just last week, but they've started up again. A rep from BRP told me that they have a new type of brake pad, but do the dealerships have them to replace the old ones? If so many people are having all these problems as I seem to be noticing in the forum, why hasn't BRP sent out letters about them? I would think they would know. It gets tiresome continually having to contact my dealership. Does anyone know what this could be from?

The Gas Smell Update

Thanks for your answer. While biking this weekend, I stopped to look at a cycle place and when getting ready to leave a mechanic came out to look at my Spyder. He said he used to be a BRP technician and had been to classes for training where they took the entire bike apart and then put them back together. I went over every problem I had ever had with my bike and he was able to explain them all to me! He even took my gas cap off and examined it when I told him that I was continuously smelling gas no matter how fast I went. He said that could be a bad problem and that it shouldn't be doing it. When looking at it he saw that the rubber ring that fits inside the cap was not sitting in it properly. It's supposed to be all the way down tightly fitting into the bottom. He even tried to get mine to go down and it wouldn't. So I'm off to the dealership AGAIN this week to swap one out of another bike of theirs I hope. As far as the other problems I've had, he said the brakes squeeking is something that it seems that no matter how many times you try to fix them, they end up doing it again. They've apparently tried tons of stuff to try to get them to not squeek..works for a while, and then does it again. The gears not shifting properly was the solenoid needing the updated version with the ground wire. My transmission filter had collapsed also and he said that because the solenoid wasn't working properly that it contributed to the transmission filter collapsing. He said if I ever need to find out anything else just contact him. Thank goodness. I also just had the DC plug put in and of course with the luck I've been having, when I tried to use it this past weekend...no connection. ONE DAY everything will be working properly! HA
