problem starting se5 model

I have been having a problem starting my 2009 se5, after turning on the key and the unit goes through its sequence of read card and push m button often I get no response from the starter only sounds like fuel pump cycle but no starting. I know there are interlocks on the seat, also on the both brake pedals
and also some times I have to rock the bike if the display shows the bike is in 1 gear. I have also left the bike in neutral after running and know brakes on and still have this intermittent problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated

  • Make sure you press the brake firmly BEFORE turning the key.
  • Try bypassing the message sequence by using the M button behind the left handlebar
  • Press and hold the engine start button until the engine starts. Do not hold the start button for more than 15 seconds. If it does not start, release the button and wait 30 seconds to let the starter cool down before trying again.
I have the same problem with my 2009 Spyder SE5. I E-mailed Can-Am, they assigned someone to my case and he called me promptly. I am in Florida and my dealer did not seem to take me seriously and told me it must be me! Not. The dealer updated the bike's computer! It still would not start for me infront of the tech! They told me and Can-Am that should be okay now. I noticed Can-Am is now offering free Road-Side service with new purchases. Seems to me they are aware of starting problems, doesn't it? Hhhmmmm
2009 SE-5 starting problem

I have had the same problem 2 times. I'm about ready to call a tow truck and suddenly it starts. I have been checking connections and plug in's and can not seem to find the problem. It will be interesting to see what Can-Am comes up with?

I had the same trouble...mechanic at dealer told me to NOT use the M button on the dash as they wear out quickly....but instead use the M button on the left handlegrip. I also had problems with a 4 month old battery that one of the 6 cells was shot; it was replaced under warranty.
If bike is left in neutral or 1st and she won't start, mashing on the brake usually releases it into neutral. if not, there is a procedure in the book for taking a 13 mm wrench and twisting a nut back or forward, down by your left foot, to pop her into Neutral

if none of this helps, have her towed to the shop and have them check the computer

I have a 08 se5 demo with 2'ks and I have noticed recently that I have had this same situation it really is annoying I purposely leave mine in a gear so it is difficult for some 1 to steal when you have so many things to do to start it. However I digress I will let the techs know at my service centre to fix it, I suppose that is all you can do.

Hi I have spoken to my service centre and the problem fix is very easy.
When you turn the key on and wait for it to do all its stuff just hit the mode button either on dash or handle bar... do not hold down just depress let go.. that is the secret. What happens is if you hold it down it keeps resetting and gets confussed, since I found this out I have had no problem.
Now also if you turn the bike off and restart it in less than about 5 mins you do not need to hit the mode button at all the trick is read the dash if it says release handbrake then thats all you need to do. hope this helps all byee

Hi Bill. I have the same bike as you. I experienced same problems. You should not have to rock it. Call Can-Am in Canada toll free: 877-469-7433 and tell them what is going on with your bike. You will get assigned as Can-Am person who WILL get back toyou and follow up with your concerns. Good luck, and keep me posted
When the Spyder acts up, does the safety message keep scrolling? I have had that problem with 2333 since it waws new. What I do is never use the M button on the dash, use the lever type button on the left handgrip, that works for me.
I had the same problem early in our (Spydee and me) relationship. I'm not sure if the updates had anything to do with it (my computer had to be re-formatted after/during the first update) but the problem went away. Hope yours does too.
