If it is the BRP backrest, lift the seat pull the red knob forward (the knob is located under the seat toward the back) and this action will release the backrest.
I have a BRP backrest on a 2016 RT I just bought. Assuming it's a CanAm backrest from the logo. No red know. Has a lever that moves left to right. I've had it off before but now seems to be stuck.
All I can offer is:
Strongly "wiggle" it up, down and sideways while holding the release lever.
Once it is off, put some silicone spray lube on the mount point and the latch.
NOT oil, NOT WD40, NOT PTFE but silicone.
Hopefully someone else will be more familiar with that actual mechanism.
