I am a new member and I am an owner of my 2nd can-am Spyder. This past week I was noticing my bike pulling to the right and the bars felt stuck to the right. After doing a ton of research (most on this forum 🤣) I decided it was the DPS motor. I called BRP and asked if my machine was affected by the recall and they said no, of course and recommended I get it to a shop immediately. After calling my shop and them telling me it would be $90 just to plug it up to a code reader I decided to figure it out on my own!! So today I pulled the fuses for the DPS and BINGO!!! No more steering issue, of course low speed is a bit tougher but above 15mph I felt no difference. My question is, will BRP acknowledge this and repair my machine seeing it is a formerly recalled issue? I don't mind looking at "check DPS" scrolling across my bike but I'm sure nobody who may want to buy it in the future will! My machine is an 09 Spyder phantom with 12k miles......anyone have any insight to this situation? Thanks in advance.

Most honest shops will apply the "diagnostic fee" to the repair bill if you have them fix it.

It seems like I remember that the recall only applied if one or more of a certain set of failure codes were present.....and you can't tell that without connecting BUDS to read them.

Agreeing to pay the $90 up front might actually turn out to be a good deal in the end.

Any other shops in the area ??

My number one complaint is that it's a known part to fail and extremely dangerous when it does. 12,000 miles and a bike having a catastrophic failure on a steering part is unacceptable in my book. I have always been a fan of spyders but 3 wheels is not safer when the power steering fails and causes you to shoot over 6' and lock your handlebars. The fix would cost me over $1500 and that's a lot to put into a bike.

Well you can complain all day long but that won't accomplish anything useful.
NO company can be expected to warranty it's products forever.
In this context, 10 years is close to forever.

Do the right thing here and get the codes read.
And then contact BRP or ask the shop to show you the "service bulletin" or recall notice.

It is possible that you have something different that has failed.
It is also possible that you have the failure in the bulletin and it will be covered.

Typing more posts on here, or other places like this, will do you NO good.

It is definitely the DPS, and I get the the fact it's 10 years old.....BUT!!! it only has 12000 miles!!!! Honestly if the machine has major mechanical issues like this with under 20k miles it makes me question my purchase. I hope nobody else has to experience the fear of your bars locking up in a corner.

YOU need to calm down.

Sometimes things wear out over TIME whether it is ridden or not.
Sometimes they fail quicker from not being ridden.

No doubt that there is something amiss with the DPS "system" but not necessarily the main CPU itself.
Might be a failed sensor or a corroded connection.

I wish you luck in getting this fixed.
But there is only one right way to do it.

I quit.

Thank you Taylor swift, I'm much calmer now. I realize now that canam spyders are not more safe than a traditional motorcycle, but actually far more dangerous. Safety is my primary concern and getting back home to my 4 kids in one piece. Lesson learned, good luck to my brothers on 3 wheels but I'm going back to 2.

We just went through the same issue with our 2008 Spyder. BRP instructed us to repair the bike and then they’d discuss payment after we took possession again. This was the third DPS unit our bike has had and with less than 8000 miles on it, you’d think BRP would do something. Guess again, they said no recalls, warranty and they wouldn’t pay for it. After our dealer helped us out a little, it was a $1400 ordeal, $1700 before that. All three of the DPS units that were put on our bike were different part numbers. We contacted the BBB and they tried to help but still ended up eating the bill. Good luck with your situation, I wish you better luck than we had.

Hello, my 2009 Phantom also has a spa code, but only sporadically. My trike has only 12000 miles on it as well. As of this week, I am now getting a brake failure code. I went through my brakes in detail yesterday and they are fine. My steering works fine, as do my brakes. I suspect it is sensor failures so I am going to have it put on the scope to see what comes up. Hopefully it will only be sensors.

What is a Phantom.....and what is an SPA code ??

P.S. Spyders are not known for failures as simple as a "sensor" going bad very often.

Most of the time the warnings and codes are due to the sensors doing what they are supposed to do.......and report an actual problem that exists.

Check the brake fluid level. If it gets even a little bit low it will throw a brake failure code. The fluid reservoir is so small that as the brake pads wear the little bit of extra fluid needed to push the calipers out will cause this.

I absolutely HATE it when folks do this:
He hasn't been back in a bit over 3 years.
So it's not likely he will see any of the answers.

I still don't know what a Phantom is......or an spa code either.
I can't help but get the feeling that he really has a different CanAm product.
