I have been in the electronics field for about 60 years now and have SEEN the damage that can be done with a toothpick in the hands of an amateur.
NOT a good idea, in general.

Then recommend a better way to clean the port!

Compressed air doesn’t always clear it and the Apple tech told me to use a wood toothpick. Love to see what damage a toothpick can do. :-D
Oh, and I’ve worked with electronics, both building and using, for 40 years and never heard of a wood tool doing any damage.

A vacuum cleaner with a tiny little attachment usually works best.
HIGH pressure air can do some damage in some cases too.
It can force the containment farther INTO the device instead of removing it.
🤣
