Headlight bulb longevity

I just purchased an '09 GS with only 2K miles!
Battery was bad so I just replaced it.
The 2 "eyeball" headlights not working (all other lights are fine). I checked the 30 amp fuse underneath the seat and it is good.
Do these bulbs go bad often? Seems strange that they would be bad after only 2K miles even though the bike is 9 years old.
I haven't removed the bulbs to check them yet. If they are good, what could the problem be and is that problem common?

Was the engine running when you checked the headlights? The headlights will not turn on until the engine is above 800 RPM. Look at page 15 of the operators guide.
