Default New here

I have been reading the Spyder forums to get a feel about these bikes. I have been researching about Spyders for some months now.
I've had a motorcycle license for decades. But, I haven't been on anything for quite a while. I have a 'dead bike' in the garage.
I live in the N. GA area and I'm seeking input about dealers...good, bad? Any experiences of other local owners?
I'm siding with getting the basic RT model and a couple of years old to save on the purchase price.
I've seen one Spyder on I-285 in Atlanta but no others and that was last Summer.

Any input would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

John

My advice is to go for it. I bought a 2008 with 3000 miles on it last year. I now have over 13,000 miles on it and have only to change oil and tires. Just make sure the steering recall has been performed and you should be ok. As far as dealers go, that's a mixed bag. Most of them will rape you on maintenance charges. An example in my area is $220 for an oil change. Learn to do the maintenance stuff yourself. For me, the bike has been a good investment, and at age 72, allows me to continue having that same degree of freedom one gets with a two-wheeler, yet with more stability in those gravel parking lots, not to mention a reverse gear when you have a large stone stuck under a wheel.

I plan to do as much maintenance that I can. Is it possible to get shop manuals for the year bike that I purchase? About the only thing I have done on my truck at a shop is the timing belt.
Doing one's own maintenance is good to learn more about what you have and what goes where in case you have problem on the road.
What is the up date you were speaking of? What other things have been problems with the Spyders?

Thanks,

John

Personally; I'm a bit sissy about attemping my own maintenace chores!
But I have no mechanical apptitude whatsoever!
I DID replace the rear brake pads and have added some farkles and didn't get too injured in the process though...

Welcome, John!!

The update is a recall on the 2008 GS. GS is the same as an RS, the sporty model. Its got to do with steering. I've been waiting so long for the dealership to get the part in and then get a replacement mechanic, I can't remember exactly what they're going to do to it. I do know that you can ride without it, but the recall makes the steering smoother.

My husband helped me with the oil change - it took us a couple of hours, but saved us $200. The manual (SM5) has one filter to change with the oil, and the automatic (SE5) has two. The oil and filters can be bought through the dealership, I got mine with my bike as a bonus from the seller, so not sure what they run yet.

Hope this helps!!!

Sass

Well, I've gone and done it now. I purchased a 2010 Spyder RT Audio & Convenience in Orbital Blue. I head up to NC with a rented trailer to bring it back home. It has less than 2K on it.
The adventure begins!
