I think that the way BRP tells you to do it is add 3 quarts of oil, run it for a few minutes and then add enough of the last quart to come to full. This is the best way to avoid overfilling the oil.
The Rotax 990 is a dry sump motor. Even if you add too much oil it just ends up in the resevoir.
There are two obvious reasons (there may be others, I ain't that smart) for oil in the airbox from the engine breather.
1. There's a rotating part in the engine slinging oil in that direction and it ends up migrating up the breather tube.
2. Your rings are poorly seated and there is excess blowby
Since not all Sypders have oil in their airboxes, I'm guessing that the second reason is the more likely.
