Default Important oil changing tips.

The oil change procedure is pretty straight forward for the most part. I have noticed the oil level rises significantly once hot, about a 1/2 inch. I have a few tips, in my opinion on doing the level correctly. The 1st thing is the reading the dipstick correctly. I have found several people reading it wrong. Just to be clear, the dipstick has a line half way up the checkered section. This is the full line, not the 1/2 way line. On the reverse side of the dipstick it is very clear as to where full is. The dipstick must be completely screwed in to read the level unlike most motorcycles. After draining the oil, i fill the oil tank with 4 qts of the 5w40 brp oil. Then let it run for a few minutes. Check the level. I like to set it no more than 1/2 way to full. This gives it room to expand. If it looks good, ride the spyder a for 5 minutes and recheck the oil level. If the oil level is too high, extra oil will go into the air box and contaminate your air filter and cause oil to drip down to the skid plates.

Very interesting.
When the oil is drained, and you replace with what is called for in the manual (4QTS) and you have replaced the oil filter, why would the oil be too much?

thank you

I think that the way BRP tells you to do it is add 3 quarts of oil, run it for a few minutes and then add enough of the last quart to come to full. This is the best way to avoid overfilling the oil.

The Rotax 990 is a dry sump motor. Even if you add too much oil it just ends up in the resevoir.

There are two obvious reasons (there may be others, I ain't that smart) for oil in the airbox from the engine breather.
1. There's a rotating part in the engine slinging oil in that direction and it ends up migrating up the breather tube.
2. Your rings are poorly seated and there is excess blowby

Since not all Sypders have oil in their airboxes, I'm guessing that the second reason is the more likely.
