to me it seems silly to spend the kind of bucks these cost when one could spend less than half and buy a proper off road ATV
my opinion only
Ditto that, Ghostwriter!

Have to agree with others in that there are some really killer ATV's or side by side's available for off road use that would blow the spyder away. The Can-Am Spyder is great for what is was designed to do........on pavement.
I would not eben try to go this route. The Spyder has a stability system that monitors each wheel. If you get in the dirt and spin a wheel the engine will be slowed down. If you get too crazy it will put the trike in limp mode. The Spyder is very sensitive and will not handle off road travel very well.
true, I don't think there is any places where an ATV is street legal
but again why spend that kind of money and try to make it do something it is not designed to? If you break anything it will cost you an arm plus leg and maybe your first born.
If you just want to tool around on dirt/gravel roads and to the grocery store and do it safely and still have some fun a good off road bike seems to me would be a much better chocie in the long run
not trying to stop you from getting one, just hate to see hard earned money thrown in the toilet for no reason

Has anyone tried putting dual sport, or knobby tires on a Spyder? Or is anything even available?
I am living in some rural areas of Texas and am pondering the feasibility of using a Spyder as a bit of a street legal workhorse that I can also put a rack on and haul stuff around the ranch and oil patch.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Being from Texas, you'll appreciate the horse analogy: Of course someone has hitched their cutting horse to a plow. That didn't make it a plow horse. Take a tip from the Amish: They keep a trotter to pull the carriage and a half dozen mules to harrow. Bikes are a lot like horses that way. Wykes even more so. One of the jobs that a dual sport bike does is run up single track ruts. How you gonna do that with a wyke making three tracks at once? Likewise with the rack. Is there enough frame in back to bolt on something substantial? Ground clearance has already been noted.
Two or three grand would score you a fine running KLR beater that you could bolt a huge rack on back of, run up a single track, and never worry about bashing plastic. But by the same token, if you're running slab to Cowboy Stadium to watch the PBR Iron Man, then you're gonna jump on the wyke.
