Risers for RS

My wife has an 08 RS. Previous owner had 1" riser installed. Looking on web-sites we can get the 4.5" risers for $100 less that 3". However, need to remove 1" riser. Can't locate directions to remove the 1", anyone have anyh pointers, how difficult is this job?

You need to be some what mechanical. Its not that hard. You will need a gear puller to pull off the 1 inch riser hub off the steering shaft and need the stock riser block to put back on. I do have the instructions i can email to you if you have a email addy. Text only, no pics. I have a service manual in pdf, and when i copy and paste from it, It only does the text. But it should be all you need.

Also need metric tools.

Ok, thanks. I've looked and looked. Seen several posts of folks that have installed 4" risers. According to everything I've seen, should have enough slack, just can't see how. Cables are all but maxed out now.

RT here so my information is anecdotal...
I believe that those cables are held in place pretty securely by cable-ties... Cut them and you should find the slack that you need.
Just make sure that you get things buttoned back down securely again!
DON'T forget to check to make sure that there's no cable-binding occurring as you turn the bars from side to side!

Email sent, Also you should have a tourque wrench for tightening down the
steering riser nut.

that's part of mystery. None of the cables are tied to anything, nust have been cut when 1" risers installed.

Removal

Remove clutch lever [1] from handlebar.
Remove right handle grip cap [2] from handlebar.

Loosen throttle housing screws [3].
Slide throttle housing outward to ensure that
handlebar cover is free to move.
– Do not remove throttle housing from handlebar.
Slide handlebar collar [4] outward to ensure that
handlebar cover is free to move.

screws [5] and 2 lower screws [6] that hold ignition
switch cover [7].
Remove ignition switch cover [7] from vehicle.

From underneath handlebar cover, remove 2 middle
screws [8] that hold handlebar cover.

Lift up handlebar cover and lay it gently on the
vehicle.
– Do not remove handlebar cover from vehicle.
NOTE: Make sure to secure handlebar cover on
the vehicle in order to avoid any tension in ignition
switch cables and wires.
NOTE: To prevent damaging of handlebar cover
or vehicle panels, place a cushioned pad between
those parts.

Remove the 3 hub screws.
– Discard hub screws.
Remove hub plate.
Remove handlebar from hub and lay it gently on
the vehicle.
NOTE: Make sure to secure handlebar on the
vehicle in order to avoid any tension in hoses,
cables and wires.
NOTE: To prevent damaging of handlebar or
vehicle panels, place a cushioned pad between
those parts.
Remove hub central nut [9] and washer [10].
– Discard hub nut.
– Keep washer for re-use.

Remove existing hub from vehicle using a puller
[11].
NOTE: Make sure that puller is properly installed
to avoid steering threads damage.

Installation

Install riser block [P1] on steering column.
NOTE: To prevent steering column damage, use
a rubber mallet to insert riser block on steering
column.
CAUTION: Do not use M10 nut to push riser
block on steering column.
Install washer [10] on steering column.
Install M10 nut [P3] on steering column.
Secure M10 nut [P3] to 26 – 32 N•m (19 – 24 lbf•ft)
NOTE: To prevent steering column damage, do not
exceed 32 N•m (24 lbf•ft). Do not use antiseize
and/or loctite on M10 nut.

Install handlebar on riser block.
Install hub plate [12].
Install hub screws [P2].
NOTE: Make sure that handlebar is centered with
vehicle hub.
Completely tighten rear hub screw.
Tighten front hub screws just enough to generate
slight tension on handlebar.
NOTE: For the moment, the handlebar must be
able to move with a slight rotating force. This
procedure is necessary to make a good adjustment
with handlebar cover.

Align handlebar cover [14] on hub plate [12].
Make sure that handlebar cover is completely
seated on hub plate [17].
Slightly rotate handlebar to create a little gap
between handlebar cover and handlebar end [15].
Remove handlebar cover from handlebar plate.
Secure hub screws [P2] to 21–28 N•m
(15–21 lbf•ft).
Re-install handlebar cover [14] on hub plate [12].
Tighten handlebar cover screws.
NOTE: Make sure to use the front holes of hub
plate to install handlebar cover screws.
Re-install ignition switch cover on vehicle.
Re-install handlebar collar.
Re-install throttle housing on handlebar.
Secure throttle housing screws.
Re-install right handle grip cap on handlebar.
Re-install clutch lever on handlebar.
Secure clutch lever screws.
Inspection
Make sure that handlebar and riser block are
properly tightened by pulling up and pushing down
the handles several times.
Turn handlebar completely from one side to the
other making sure it does not exert a unwanted
tension on throttle cable, clutch hose, and other
wires.

011.jpgThanks for input. I did finaly get them installed. Had to remove windshield so I coul remove gages to get to ties on lower cables. With a little re-routing, got the slack I needed. Did have to get some handle bar stock to replace grips and such. Found out Live Oak has an awesome fabrication shop. They build parts for racers and such.

I added the 4.5" risers from ESI last weekend. I had to remove my 1" riser and found that it is much easier to go from 1" to stock than stock to 1".

There are six screws that hold the ignition cover on as listed below in the instructions that have been provided. These are hard to see and figure out what size 1/4 drive socket to use. The top and outside screws use 8mm and the two bottom ones use a 10mm socket.

Warning! It is easy to drop the screws into the nether regions of the Spyder. Take a cloth and wrap it around the steering column to catch any dropped screws.
